Education Funnies

Randy Glasbergen is a funny cartoonist. I especially like his education cartoons. I would post a pic here, but I can't because of copyright protection.

By the way, if you're interested in learning more about copyright protection, check out the funny cartoonist's site. Glasbergen has links to articles explaining how that works.

Advice to students of all ages: Major in learning

New technologies and new media continue to challenge and change the way we live and work, so this sounds like good advice from Google:

Keep in mind that many required skills will change: developers today code in
something called Python, but when I was in school C was all the rage. The need
for reasoning, though, remains constant, so we believe in taking the most
challenging courses in core disciplines: math, sciences, humanities. And then
keep on challenging yourself, because learning doesn't end with graduation...
Learning, it turns out, is a lifelong major. [More at the Official Google Blog]

Christian Bloggers Network on Facebook

Just a quick word for fellow Christian bloggers and members of Facebook. There's a group on Facebook called the Christian Bloggers Network. Its purpose is to "connect, share life and information, and coordinate activities and events." One upcoming event is the Vegas BlogWorld & New Media Expo. They will be working with Christian bloggers and other new media people to cover the event.

Teacher 2.0 and The Clever Sheep

Rodd Lucier [pronounced LOO-see-ay] is a very prolific podcaster. I've been listening to his Teacher 2.0 podcasts for the last couple of days. I'm nowhere near finished listening to everything. He posts a new 5-7 minute podcast almost every day!

Now my 2Gb iPod Nano is full. :( But I like listening to ideas for creative teaching with technology. He talks about interesting ways teachers can use Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, and dozens of other free online tools.

He also has a web site with a funny name: TheCleverSheep.com. It has lots of posts and videos about using technology to enhance learning. The podcast link is on that site, too.

Do you wear a tie to work?

A Gallup Poll reveals only six percent of men wore ties to work last year, and that was down from ten percent in 2002. Monster.com cited that article, and several people added their comments on ties at work.

Some people say ties make you look more professional. I don't think there is anything inherent within the tie that is professional, only other people's perceptions. We dress a certain way so our boss or friends will approve. Or we do so because we think they have a better view of us. But if so few people actually wear ties these days, maybe those perceptions are wrong.

A friend on Facebook quoted Linda Ellerbee saying, "How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?" Good question. If I didn't have to wear a tie, I wouldn't. But some companies require it. In that case, if you want to keep your job, you have to tie the noose.

What do you think about ties and other workplace dress codes?
