Do you wear a tie to work?
A Gallup Poll reveals only six percent of men wore ties to work last year, and that was down from ten percent in 2002. Monster.com cited that article, and several people added their comments on ties at work.
Some people say ties make you look more professional. I don't think there is anything inherent within the tie that is professional, only other people's perceptions. We dress a certain way so our boss or friends will approve. Or we do so because we think they have a better view of us. But if so few people actually wear ties these days, maybe those perceptions are wrong.
A friend on Facebook quoted Linda Ellerbee saying, "How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?" Good question. If I didn't have to wear a tie, I wouldn't. But some companies require it. In that case, if you want to keep your job, you have to tie the noose.
What do you think about ties and other workplace dress codes?

Hmm...I think there's probably a good reason only six percent of men wore ties to work last year. The little noose comment is quite appropriate.
And now I'm wondering about the percentage of women who exclusively wear skirts or dresses to work.
I've been in both situations, and I'd have to say I prefer not to wear ties. They're kind of like the "appendix" of the male wardrobe. Lots of people have them, but nobody's sure what they're for and we can certainly live without them. :) IMO, a person's behavior conveys their professionalism much more effectively than does a piece of clothing.
